THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A COLLEGE CONSULTANT

For students and families who value the personal attention of a dedicated and knowledgeable professional, working with an independent college consultant is a wise choice. With literally thousands of schools and universities to choose from, how do students and families embark on the college selection process?

Marla Platt works to distress the college application process through not only attentive listening, but also asking the right questions to help identify what is appropriate for each family and their student. For starters, the well-considered marla-portraitapplication goes far beyond the so-called “top school” rankings in the media.  Marla begins the dialog with a thoughtful discussion of what kind of educational environment best suits each student, including size, location, academic and social environment, and much, much more.

Through meetings and interviews with student and parents combined with assessment inventories, Marla Platt creates an initial list of potential schools which best meet the students’ academic and personal criteria.  From there, a target list is ultimately created with schools to which the student applies. By working with Marla Platt, students and parents have a professional hand in wading through the myriad steps that are essential to the college application process, including high school course selection, standardized testing, interview skills, essay support, proofreading of applications, and more.

About Marla Platt

Marla Platt has coached and tutored a wide range of students for over twenty years, ranging from students with substantial learning differences to those bound for the most highly selective colleges and universities. As a long-standing alumni interviewer for Cornell University, Marla brings perspective to her student clients on putting one’s best foot forward in person as well as in an application.

Marla is also trained as a Personal Coach, enabling her to bring highly developed skills in communication, collaboration and organization to working with students and parents.  In addition, Marla has provided coaching to Babson College undergraduates through the school’s Coaching for Leadership and Teamwork Program, helping students to recognize individual performance strengths and target areas for development.

As a parent of teens, she is highly sensitive to the demands placed upon young people during their late high school years and the value of supportive teamwork during the college application process.
