What matters most in admissions

It is common knowledge that colleges rely on student transcripts and academic records when evaluating eligibility for admission. But what is less commonly understood are the numerous other factors that also count.

Colleges are looking for students who are prepared for success in their anticipated field of study as well as fit for the college's community and overall mission. But how is fit determined?

Over the course of six or seven high school semesters, students have developed evidence of character, commitment, initiative, leadership and growth.  Every element of the college application has the potential to reflect each of these qualities that signal fit and readiness for college study:

  • Course rigor tells the admissions office that the student is ready to engage in college-level coursework.
  • Extracurricular activities and/or jobs reflect commitment, impact and possibly leadership.
  • Recommendation letters share insights about community engagement and classroom impact.
  • At some colleges, test scores suggest likelihood of academic success at that individual institution.
  • Showing active interest in a colleges correlates with excitement ahout attending and likelihood of admission.

At some schools, evidence of character traits such as resilience, persistence, confidence and passion are significant in the application review. These characteristics can be found in recommendation letters; essays; and possibly the interview if available.
