Rolling Admissions Colleges: Top Schools & Deadlines | AchieveCoach

What is rolling admissions, exactly?

"Rolling admissions rewards the proactive student who doesn't wait for a deadline to tell them when to apply."

What Is Rolling Admissions?

Unlike schools with fixed deadlines (November 1 for Early Action, January 1 for Regular Decision), rolling admissions schools accept applications over a long window and make decisions on a first-come, first-reviewed basis.

Applying in September or October to a rolling admissions school can yield a decision early in senior year, giving you peace of mind while you wait on other schools. Who doesn't appreciate a little less stress in their college process?

Top Colleges & Universities with Rolling Admissions

Below are six standout institutions across selectivity levels that use rolling or near-rolling admissions. Details shift year to year, so always verify directly with each school.

1. Penn State University

University Park, PA | Acceptance rate ~55% | Large research university

One of the most well-known rolling admissions schools in the country, Penn State reviews applications as soon as they are complete. Penn State is an excellent option across business, engineering, communications, and pre-med tracks.

Consultant Tip: Apply by November for the best scholarship consideration.

2. University of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA | Acceptance rate ~65% | R1 Research University

Pitt is a perennial underrated gem with a medical center that ranks among the nation's best. Its rolling process means strong applicants can receive decisions within weeks. Generous merit scholarships are available but are awarded on a rolling basis — another reason to apply early.

Consultant Tip: The Honors College has a November 1 priority deadline even within the rolling window.

3. Michigan State University

East Lansing, MI | Acceptance rate ~76% | Big Ten university

MSU's rolling process is one of the most student-friendly in the Big Ten. With nationally ranked programs in supply chain, agriculture, education, and communication, it offers significant academic depth. Applications open August 1, and students who apply in the fall often receive decisions within three to four weeks.

Consultant Tip: Priority scholarships close in November — don't wait until spring.

4. University of Alabama

Tuscaloosa, AL | Acceptance rate ~80% | SEC flagship university

Alabama's rolling admissions process runs from October 1 through the spring, but its scholarship structure is what makes it truly distinctive. The university offers substantial merit aid for students who meet GPA and test score thresholds, and those scholarships are tied to specific priority deadlines that reward early applicants.

Priority scholarship deadlines:

  • October 15: Priority deadline for the Presidential Scholarship (full out-of-state tuition)
  • December 1: Deadline for most named merit scholarships
  • February 1: General merit aid consideration deadline
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout, but scholarship funds decrease significantly after each deadline passes

Consultant Tip ➜ ➜:  Out-of-state students with strong grades and test scores should treat October 15 as their personal deadline. Alabama can be as affordable as an in-state school with the right scholarship package.

5. Arizona State University

Tempe, AZ | Acceptance rate ~88% | Largest public research university in the U.S.

With more than 350 undergraduate programs across campuses in Tempe, Scottsdale, downtown Phoenix, and the West Valley, ASU's rolling admissions process allows students to apply at any point and receive a rapid decision. Its W.P. Carey School of Business, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, and Barrett Honors College are standout programs attracting serious students nationwide.

Consultant Tip: Barrett Honors College has its own application with a February 1 priority deadline — apply to ASU and Barrett simultaneously for the best chance.

6. Rutgers University – New Brunswick

New Brunswick, NJ | Acceptance rate ~66% | Flagship public research university

Rutgers is New Jersey's flagship university and a top-tier public research institution with a global reputation in pharmacy, business, engineering, and the social sciences. Its rolling admissions process means decisions can come quickly, though the university does recommend applying early for maximum scholarship consideration. With proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, Rutgers students benefit from exceptional internship and career opportunities.

Consultant Tip: While rolling, Rutgers strongly encourages applying by December 1 for merit scholarship priority — aid is not guaranteed after that date.

How to Maximize Your Chances in Rolling Admissions

Preparing a solid application by late summer and applying early in the cycle is the best bet. Here is your action checklist:

  1. Apply as early as the window opens — August or September for most schools.
  2. Have all materials ready lined up: transcripts, test scores (if submitting), recommendations and polished essay(s)
  3. Do not wait for a 'perfect' application. A strong application submitted in October beats a perfect one in February.
  4. Check scholarship deadlines separately. Merit aid often has its own cutoffs within the rolling window.
  5. Follow up promptly if the school requests additional materials. Don't delay your evaluation.

The Bottom Line

Rolling admissions schools deserve a serious spot on every student's college list. Many of these institutions offer outstanding academics, strong alumni networks, and generous financial aid. The students who apply early in the rolling window consistently see the best outcomes.
