The More Accurate Cost Predictor Tool: Instant Net Price Estimator

Marla Platt • November 19, 2025

A new tool offers a more accurate picture of college costs

A new and simplified tuition cost calculator, developed by an economist and adopted by 22 selective US colleges and universities, provides a more realistic cost estimate than that provided by the standard net price calculators required by the federal government.

The Net Price Estimator primarily evaluates two metrics: household income and number of siblings enrolled in college. According to The New York Times, the simplified tool delivers a cost estimate in seconds.

.

The 22 colleges launching the calculator this year include:

  • Amherst College
  • Bates College
  • Boston College
  • Brandeis University
  • Colby College
  • Colorado College
  • Columbia University
  • Cornell University
  • Dartmouth College
  • Denison College
  • Emory University
  • Grinnell College
  • Occidental College
  • Trinity College
  • Tufts University
  • University of Notre Dame
  • University of Richmond
  • Washington and Lee University
  • Washington Univ. (St. Louis)
  • Wellesley College
  • Williams College
  • Yale University

The rollout of this new estimating tool has tremendous potential to provide families with a simpler, more accessible picture of costs. Coming to the college process with a realistic perspective on affordability is essential to making smart and responsible choices.
