You're on the Waitlist -- Now What?

A practical guide to navigating college waitlists with confidence!

Getting waitlisted feels like a “maybe” in a season full of yeses and no’s, and that uncertainty can be hard. But a waitlist placement means you are still in the game, and knowing how to handle it can make all the difference in attracting a late-season acceptance.

How Waitlists Work

Colleges use waitlists to manage enrollment. After May 1st, the national decision deadline, schools see how many students commit. If fewer students enroll than expected, colleges turn to the waitlist to fill spots. Movement can happen anytime from May through the summer, though most activity occurs in May and June.

Where Am I on the Waitlist?

To be clear, a waitlist is not an actual numbered list and instead represents a pool of names. This means that students are not listed in any particular order, unlike a standby list for a seat on a flight, for example. So do colleges just pull names randomly off of the waitlist? Not exactly. Colleges examine the students who have committed to the incoming class to determine what the school may still need. For example, colleges may seek to fill out their freshman class with students who bring geographic diversity or unique experiences. This is why waitlist placement can be opaque.

What To Do Right Now

First and most importantly: accept a spot at another school you’re genuinely happy about by May 1st. Never leave yourself without a confirmed place to land.

Then, if you want to remain on the waitlist, send the college a brief, warm but brief “letter of continued interest.” Tell them why specifically why this school remains your first choice, share any meaningful updates since your application (grades, awards, experiences). Keep it focused and genuine. A couple of paragraphs is plenty.

One well-crafted message is the right approach. Avoid repeated follow-up emails as they won’t help your chances and can work against you.

Whatever happens, trust the process. The right college is the one where you will thrive by finding academic success as well as your place in the community.

What matters most in admissions

It is common knowledge that colleges rely on student transcripts and academic records when evaluating eligibility for admission. But what is less commonly understood are the numerous other factors that also count.

Colleges are looking for students who are prepared for success in their anticipated field of study as well as fit for the college's community and overall mission. But how is fit determined?

Over the course of six or seven high school semesters, students have developed evidence of character, commitment, initiative, leadership and growth. Every element of the college application has the potential to reflect each of these qualities that signal fit and readiness for college study:

Course rigor tells the admissions office that the student is ready to engage in college-level coursework.

March is a great time for juniors to gain clarity and build momentum. Here are three smart ways to make the most of this season and the months ahead:

Qualifying for AP Scholar Awards

The many flavors of AP recognition

AP Exams are scored on a 1-to-5 scale, with 5 being the highest score. Most colleges award credit for AP scores of 4 and 5. Some schools may also grant credit for a score of 3.

Earning college credit through AP exam scores can allow students to apply these credits toward their course requirements or electives. As a result, students may gain more flexibility in their college course choices, or be able to add a second major or a minor.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR AP RECOGNITIONS AND HONORS

The AP Scholar designation recognizes students who achieve a 4 or 5 on a minimum of three AP exams.

Congratulations, seniors!! �� College acceptance letters are arriving, and now comes one of the most exciting decisions of your life: choosing where you'll spend the next four years. Whether you're visiting a campus for the first time or returning with fresh eyes, these visits are your opportunity to move beyond brochures and rankings and select the school that truly feels like home.

Here's how to get the most out of every campus visit.

Arrive with an Open Mind

Walk the paths. Step inside academic and residential buildings whenever you're permitted. Let yourself wander a little because some of the truest impressions come from spontaneous moments. Keep your phone handy to record photos you can revisit later since memories have a way of blurring together. Capture the details that catch your eye.

What to Look For: Your Campus Visit Checklist

Let these ten areas guide your observations and conversations during each visit:

Feel the Layout: Picture yourself navigating this campus every day. Is it easy to move between classes and residence halls? Does the physical scale feel comfortable — energizing, not exhausting?
Assess Your Safety and Comfort: Pay attention to how safe and welcome you feel as you move around. Are there well-lit walkways from the library to your dorm, for example? Note any areas that feel less welcoming, particularly at night, and ask students or security staff about campus safety resources and practices.
Sit In on a Class: This is one of the most valuable things you can do. Contact the Admissions Office in advance about how to arrange access to a lecture or seminar. Try to observe both a large lecture hall and a smaller discussion-based class. Experiencing both will tell you a lot about how learning feels on that campus.
Read the Energy of the Student Body: As you walk through common areas, the quads, or the library, look around. Do students seem engaged and energized? Are they smiling and interacting? A campus culture reveals itself in the everyday body language of the people who live it.
Eat at the Dining Hall: Grab a meal or a snack in the campus cafeteria. Beyond checking out the food quality and variety, notice the social atmosphere. Are students sitting together in pairs and groups, laughing and talking? A lively dining hall is often a sign of a connected campus community.
Talk to Students: Strike up conversations with current students. Ask them what they love most about the school, and also ask what they would change. Candid answers are gold. When you approach current students with friendly curiosity, they are likely to be refreshingly honest especially if you ask why they chose the school.
Check the Bulletin Boards and Posted Flyers: Campus bulletin boards are a low-tech but revealing window into student life. What clubs, events, performances, and causes are being promoted? Look for activities that align with your current interests or maybe spark new ones.
Ask: What Did You Do Last Weekend?: This simple question to a current student can be incredibly telling. The answer reveals the real social life of the campus beyond what any admissions brochure says. Do the weekend activities sound appealing to you?
Visit the Career Center: The Career Center is a must-stop, and it's often overlooked on campus tours. Talk to staff about how students find internships and jobs, whether recruiters come on campus, and how alumni networks support career development. A strong Career Center will likely be an impactful resource as you advance throughout your college years. Is freshman year too early for you to connect with your campus career center? Definitely not!
Explore the Spaces That Matter to You: If you're a musician, find the practice rooms. If fitness is important, tour the gym and recreation facilities. Interested in research? Ask to peek into lab spaces. The right environment for your specific interests and lifestyle matters more than you might expect.

A Few More Tips to Make Your Visit Count
Stay overnight if you can. Many schools offer prospective students the chance to stay with a current student host. There's no better way to experience the rhythm of campus life than waking up there in the morning.

Visit on a regular academic day. Avoid visiting during exam weeks, spring break, or major holidays. You want to experience the campus fully alive for the truest flavor of what it’s like to study and live there.

Explore beyond the official tour. After the guided tour ends, take some time to wander on your own or with your family. Walk off the beaten path, find a coffee shop, or sit on the lawn. How does it feel to just “be” there?

Journal your impressions the same day. Visit fatigue is real. After two or three campuses, details start to merge. Write down your honest gut reactions while they're still fresh — what you loved, what gave you pause, and how you felt walking away.

Trust Your Instincts
At the end of the day, data and rankings can only tell you so much. Pay attention to how you feel on each campus. Did you feel at home? Could you picture your future there? The right school won't just check boxes — it will feel like a place where you can grow, belong, and thrive.

A campus that fits you speaks to your preferences. Enjoy the process, ask great questions, and trust yourself. The best decision is the one that's right for you and your goals.

Ugh -- I've Been Deferred. Now What?

Early round application decisions have gradually begun to arrive in the form of admission; deny or deferral. Admission and denial are pretty clear cut. Applicants know where they stand. Deferrals, on the other hand, are a little less clear.

A deferral decision is not a denial, but a postponement. Colleges defer when they are not quite ready to make a decision about an applicant. Admissions may need more information, example: updated grades. In other situations, the college may want to review the applicant again in the context of the larger Regular Decision applicant pool, especially if there is an expectation that there will be many more students coming through that cycle.

What's next?

First, if you have been deferred, hang in there. Some schools defer broadly -- it's just their MO, plain and simple. Wondering what to do next? Consider the following:

Share significant updates to your Activities list, special honors or awards.

If you have not engaged with schools that count interest, consider being in contact, as appropriate, through a campus visit; request an interview; sign up for a webinar; etc.

How are your senior first semester grades looking? These will be an important part of your application re-evaluation.

Are you open to changing your proposed major to one that may be slightly less competitive?

L ook at your current list one more time with a realistic lens. Do you need to make some readjustments to your college plan?

Above all, keep up your good work for when deferring colleges re-read your solid application later on in the broader application pool.

Waiting can be hard sometimes and the suspense is real, but hang in there and stay strong during the waiting season!

Merit Aid vs. Outside Scholarships

For Families with Demonstrated Financial Need, Merit Aid Often Matters More Than Outside Scholarships

Many families assume that applying for numerous outside scholarships is the best way to lower college costs. In reality, merit scholarships awarded directly by colleges often provide far greater financial benefit.

Attracting a merit award is a gift that "keeps on giving." Merit aid reduces tuition and fees upfront and is usually renewable for multiple years, which helps with cost predictability, Outside scholarships, however, are frequently counted against a student’s financial aid package, especially at private colleges. When this happens, the college may reduce its own need-based grant by the amount that was awarded through the scholarship. Bottom line: the actual net cost does not change.

In other words, a student with demonstrated financial need who receives a substantial merit award is often in a better financial position than a student relying on multiple small outside scholarships.

What Exactly is Merit Aid?

Think of a merit award as the proverbial "carrot on the stick." Colleges award merit money to attract students whom they want to yield. While academic or extracurricular strengths and accomplishments are typically the basis behind merit awards, that is not always the case. Sometimes an applicant's diversity of interests, background, unique experiences, talents or geography can tip the scales in favor of merit awards.

A strong signal of character or fit with a particular college and its priorities can also attract merit.

Note that not all colleges offer merit aid. Typically, the most selective colleges and universities do not offer merit awards in order to attract applicants or yield their classes.

The Reality Behind Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships often displace institutional need-based grants. In fact, this practice is called scholarship displacement. Many colleges follow a policy through which outside scholarships are applied to reduce institutional awards.

For example:

A student receives:
$25,000 in college grant aid
$5,000 in outside scholarships
The college may reduce its grant aid to $20,000.
Net result: No financial gain for the family.

This practice is common at many private colleges and universities, where institutional grants make up a large portion of aid packages.

Outside scholarships:

May require lengthy applications and essays
Offer relatively small award amounts ($500–$2,000) and are extremely competitive
Are often one-time awards

Students may spend dozens of hours applying for scholarships that ultimately do not significantly reduce the total cost of college if the college adjusts its aid downward by the value of outside scholarships.

Merit Aid

In contrast, merit aid Is predictable and renewable if the student remains in good standing. Typically, merit scholarships:

Are awarded at admission
Are renewable for 4 years
Can be significant -- sometimes $20,000–$100,000+ over four years

From a planning standpoint, merit aid gives families clarity and stability.

When Pursuing Outside Scholarships Does Make Sense

Outside scholarships can still be worthwhile when:

A family does not qualify for need-based aid or merit is unlikely.
A college allows outside scholarships to be added on top of institutional aid. This is known as "stacking."
The college's policy allows outside scholarships to replace student loans or work-study obligations.
The scholarship is substantial and renewable.
If applying to local or community-based scholarships which tend to have less broad competition. These might include scholarships funded by Rotary; memorial organizations; special grant-making organizations; high school PTO.

Some Common FAQs About Merit Aid vs. Outside Scholarships

Q. Why do colleges reduce their own aid when a student receives an outside scholarship?

A. Colleges are required to ensure that total aid does not exceed the cost of attendance. Colleges are likely to apply outside scholarships toward meeting a student’s demonstrated financial need . This is likely to result in a reduction of institutional grants as additional outside funding becomes part of the equation.

Q. Will an outside scholarship ever increase what a family pays?

A.Usually no, but because it may not lower the cost at all, students can feel disappointed after investing significant time in outside scholarship applications.

Q. Is merit aid ever affected by outside scholarships?

A.Merit aid is usually more protected than need-based aid, but policies vary. Families should always review each college’s financial aid website or consult the financial aid office directly on the impact of an outside scholarship on merit awards.

The Bottom Line

College-awarded merit scholarships almost always lowers the true cost of attendance and are a more reliable way to reduce college costs. Outside scholarships should be viewed as a potential supplement and not the primary strategy for paying for college.

A new tool offers a more accurate picture of college costs

A new and simplified tuition cost calculator, developed by an economist and adopted by 22 selective US colleges and universities, provides a more realistic cost estimate than that provided by the standard net price calculators required by the federal government.

A Look at Holistic College Admissions

Just as no two colleges or two applicants are completely alike, individual colleges operate by their own standards and preferences when evaluating applicants for admission. Schools that refer to their "holistic admission process" look at each student with a variety of lenses that go beyond GPA and sometimes SAT/ACT scores as well.

Different from holistic admissions is statistics-based admissions , often preferred by larger state institutions managing tens of thousands of applications. Here, admission decisions are largely based on a combination of student high school GPA and standardized testing scores, if available. In other words: it's the numbers that count.

What's your major?

Whether or not a college employs a holistic approach, it is worth pointing out that colleges might establish designated minimums or standards for a particular majors. Examples include GPA and possibly SAT/ACT minimums for students interested in STEM fields; pre-professional tracks such as business. Merit scholarship awards may also be based on performance stats.

So what is holistic admissions?

When colleges refer to a holistic admissions process, they are interested in applicants beyond statistics alone. Admissions will review applicants in a broader context that reflects more of their individual contributions or impact in their school or community. Typical examples include a greater focus on rigor or strength of high school curriculum; the application essay; teacher or counselor comments in a recommendation letter; an interview conversation; and more.

What are some advantages of holistic admissions?

For students who may have an inconsistent record of academic performance or "average" SAT/ACT scores, a holistic review will take into account other areas of performance that signal fit or success at the school. In a holistic review, other student aspects may positively overshadow transcript bumps along the way.

Holistic reviews will probably vary from school to school, but they tend to include a broad set of criteria, including:

Rigor of high school curriculum

Grades earned

SAT, ACT, AP scores or IB predicted scores

Extracurricular involvement and evidence of leadership

Honors or awards

Strong personal essay

Demonstrated interest

Personal qualities or evidence of character

Fit for the school as evidenced through supplemental essays, if required

It should be comforting for high school students and parents to know that, in general, colleges seek the best in each applicant and review for the skills and preparedness that speak to their future success in college and their intended area of study. Deciding Between Regular or Early Admission Plans

Spring is on its way, and with brightening skies and budding branches comes College Season! Juniors are stepping into the process of self-discovery and researching good-fit colleges where they can grow their aspirations and achieve their goals.

But once students have done all of their excellent college research and application prep work, there are still decisions to consider: When do I apply? What is the best timing for me? How does earlier or later in the application process matter for me?

Colleges offer a varied schedule of admission plans and deadlines, including Regular, Early Action, Early Decision, Early Decision I, Early Decision II, Restricted/Single Choice Early Action and Rolling.

New House Bill Proposes Severe Impacts on Student Financial Aid

Pending legislation to reshape federal student aid

There is currently a Republican House-led bill that proposes substantial changes to financial assistance for both undergraduate and graduate students, including students aiming to finance their professional education.

Proposed changes include elimination of subsidized Stafford loans, primarily affecting middle and lower income students. There are also plans affecting loan forgiveness, repayment timelines, Federal Work Study as well as placing limits on parent private loans.

Schools with the Highest Share of International Students

Harvard is not the only university that relies on the attendance of (and revenue from) international students.

A decine in international student attendance spells significant impacts to universities' bottom lines as well as financial support of domestic students. Tuition revenue coming from international enrollees can be significantly higher than that of domestic students, effectively subsidizing costs for U.S. students.

Beyond financial concerns, the enrollment of international students on the undergraduate and graduate levels significantly informs the student experience both in and out of the classroom. Forced reductions of international students are projected to impact research efforts, future scholarly accomplishment as well as the financial health of local economies.

As a result, the long-term consequences of significant reductions in international student attendance will be multifold and felt for years to come. As of this writing, judicial decisions and further actions are pending.

Your Academic Spark and Major Fit

The college application journey, especially for selective schools, can feel like a high-stakes game. Students often fixate on a specific career, believing that choosing a corresponding major is the magic key to admission. But here's the secret: it's not about chasing a dream job, it's about igniting your academic spark.

In determining fit for a specific major, colleges look for evidence that the applicant will be successful in that area of study. The review is designed to assess a student's experiences-to-date that connect to that area of study and might focus on:

depth of experiences and outcomes
issues you care about
courses taken that signal a fit for that area of study -- especially in a rigorous field

Selective colleges, particularly those with defined programs, are looking for genuine passion and demonstrated potential. They want to see that your chosen major isn't just a stepping stone to a career, but a reflection of your intellectual curiosity and unique strengths. As an educational consultant, I often see students and parents focusing on the "what" (the career) before the "why" (the genuine interest).

Instead of starting with a career goal, embark on a journey of self-discovery. Ask yourself these important questions, and let the answers sink in:

Do you enjoy a particular academic subject? Which classes make you excited to learn more? Which topics do you find yourself reading about in your free time? What makes you think, "Wow, I want to learn more about this!"?

What issues and subjects are you excited about? What problems in the world do you care about solving? What ideas ignite your curiosity? Where do you feel you can make a difference?

Think about the extracurricular and/or work activities you have most enjoyed. Where have you felt most engaged and fulfilled ? What skills have you developed and enjoyed using? Where do you lose track of time because you're so absorbed in what you're doing?

In what academic subjects are you naturally strongest? Which subjects come easily to you and allow you to excel? Where do you feel a sense of accomplishment and confidence? The answers might tell you a lot about your native talents.

Answers to these questions can throw light on potential academic interests and major fit.

Examples of interests and major fit

A student who loves debating, researching complex issues, and excels in history and English might be a great fit for a major in political science or history.

A student who enjoys building things, solving puzzles, and is strong in math and physics might thrive in an engineering program.

And a student who enjoys analyzing trends, strategizing, and working with others might find their niche in business.

Selective college majors want to see evidence of your interest in a particular field . T his evidence comes from your background experiences. Let's brainstorm some ideas...

Computer Science: Participate in coding competitions, develop your own apps, contribute to open-source projects, or even just tinker with Raspberry Pi.

Engineering: Join a robotics club, build a drone, participate in a science Olympiad, or volunteer at a maker space.

Business: Start a small business, volunteer for the finance committee at your school, join the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), shadow a professional in the business world, or take an online course in entrepreneurship.

For business, think about what aspects intrigue you most. Is it the analytical side, like finance or accounting? The creative side, like marketing or advertising? The strategic side, like management or entrepreneurship? Each of these can lead to different experiences. Maybe you volunteer to manage the finances for a school club, create a marketing campaign for a local charity, or interview a local business owner about their journey.

Summary and best advice

When it comes time to apply, don't just say you're interested in something – show it! Get involved, explore, and discover what truly excites you. Focusing on background experiences and genuine fit for a major will significantly strengthen your college applications.

By focusing on the authentic "why" behind your chosen major, you'll not only increase your chances of admission to a selective program, but also set yourself up for a more fulfilling and successful college experience -- and ultimately -- a career you are likely to love.

Even at the start of a busy school year, it's smart to block out some time for touring local campuses to get a taste of their location, size, and vibe. Your early feedback will be helpful later on as you plan a good-fit list of colleges. Early and late fall often offer lovely days for campus visits!

Starting your college search early is a sure-fire way to reduce stress, make informed decisions, and ultimately find the best fit for your needs. While it's tempting to jump right into planning a cross-country college tour, starting with local colleges offers several distinct advantages. Here are some compelling reasons to prioritize local college visits before venturing further afield:

1. Get a feel for fit:

For many high schoolers who have never visited a college campus, the idea of living and studying away from home can seem like a vague concept. Setting foot on campuses close to home is a great way to start getting a feel for what college life is like.

Direct Admissions Through the Common App

Select colleges offering direct admissions based on meeting eligibility requirements

The Common Application offers eligible students the opportunity for direct admission to participating institutions through the Common App Direct Admissions Process.

Through the student's Common App responses, colleges identify first generation, lower or middle income students with minimum GPA levels and who meet state residency requirements.

Eligible students then receive a non-binding offer from participating colleges, inviting the student to officially apply via the Common App and supply necessary academic records. The colleges making the preliminary offer then invite students to apply free of application fees.

Participating colleges in the student's home state set their admission criteria for admission. Several Massachusetts colleges participated in the program last year:

Top 10 Things Rising Seniors Can Do This Summer

1. Complete your Common Application

The Common Application is accepted by hundreds of colleges and is a great place to start. If you know you’ll be applying to colleges that do not accept the Common App, such as the University of California system schools, you can work on them as well, using the Common App as a prototype.

2. Write your Common Application personal essay

Applying for college can take up as much time as a regular class during the senior year. By preparing a personal essay in advance that can be tailored to different applications, students can spend more time on studies and extra-curricular activities once school begins.

3. Request recommendation letters

Normally recommendation letters come from junior year teachers who have taught the student in full-year classes. Teachers usually appreciate having the extra time over the summer to write a recommendation when the memory of the student’s achievements is fresh.

4. Visit (or plan to visit) campuses

While summer is not the ideal time to visit campuses because there aren’t many students there, this is the time high school students are free and parents’ schedules are usually more flexible. These visits can also be made in the early fall and should include sitting in on a class, looking at dorm rooms, eating in the cafeteria, and meeting with coaches and professors in areas of interest.

5. Develop preliminary list of colleges

Review college websites, the Fiske Guide, student review sites like Niche.com, and other sources of information you’ve found helpful so far. Create a list of colleges to consider. The goal is a balanced list that includes good-fit target schools along with some reaches and ‘likelies.’

6. Participate in meaningful activities

Summer is a time to act on interests through internships, volunteer work, clubs, or paid positions. Try something productive and creative, preferably in an area of interest.

7. Keep a summer journal

A journal can help students chronicle their activities as well as determine what they want and need for the next few years. Journals also serve to help improve communication skills, critical for later success.

8. Plan to take a final SAT or ACT if needed

Rising seniors should have taken SATs and ACTs at least once by this point but may want to take a final test in the summer or fall. Sign up early to ensure you get a seat at a nearby location. Students should establish a practice preparation plan at least a month or two before the exam date. Remember to stick to your plan!

9. Begin scholarship search

Use web-based services to begin a search for private scholarships. Fastweb.com is one free search platform that provides access to a consolidated database of available scholarships. (Remember to consider college merit money, too.)

10. READ!

IECA experts point to reading as the best way to improve vocabulary and prepare for standardized tests. While reading, have a dictionary handy to look up unfamiliar words.

The spring college fair season is underway!

Calling high school juniors and parents! Just like the cheerful daffodils popping up in early spring, college representatives are on their way to a college fair near you.

Think of this time as start to your college journey. In addition to the fun meet-and-greets, there is a lot more that students can do with the information gathered on fair day. Each of the following 10 tips describes an action step to help you make the most out of your early college exploration:

1. Hold onto the names of any college representatives you may have chatted with at the fair. Some might end up reading your application or interviewing you a few months later.

2. Organize college fact sheets, brochures, screen shots, etc. in a file box or digital file.

3. Begin to give more thought to the type of school or program that is the best fit for you. Do you want a solid foundation in the liberal arts or something more pre-professional such as business, engineering or education?

4. Start the college affordability conversation with a parent or trusted advisor. College is expensive, so understand what is financially within reach for you and your family.

5. After signing in at any of the college tables you visited, you will now be on the schools' mailing lists. Remember to stay in touch and sign up for future webinars; student panels; admission events.

6. Think about geography.. Even if the very thought of flip-flops and blue skies makes your heart sing, consider what kind of distance and travel is truly realistic for you and your family when it comes to choosing colleges.

How to Figure Out Your "Real" GPA

Knowing how colleges recalculate GPAs helps students better understand their transcript

The high school GPA (grade point average) is a critical component in college admissions. But not every transcript is assessed in the same manner. Colleges frequently adjust GPAs to maintain uniformity and equity between applicants.

Have you ever wondered what occurs after you click "submit" on your college application? Let me now lift the curtain and provide some behind-the-scenes information, namely about your high school transcript.

TRANSCRIPT REVIEW

Once your application lands in the hands of the admissions team, colleges dive deep into your transcript, looking at every course you've taken, the grades you've earned, and almost always the rigor of your courses and course load. They're not just checking for straight A's (although those are always nice); they're looking for trends, improvements, and how you've challenged yourself academically.

But here's the kicker: not all high schools calculate GPAs the same way. Some use weighted scales , others don't. Some factor in course levels such as honors, AP or dual enrollment classes, while others stick to a more straightforward approach. So what's an Admissions Office to do?

RECALCULATING THE GPA

Colleges frequently use their own method to normalize the various grading systems used by high schools, based on the raw transcript data you provide. This guarantees fairness in the admissions process and enables them compare students and their high schools on an apples-to-apples basis.

Essential academic subjects such as english, math, foreign language, natural science, social science, and sometimes computer science will be factored into the GPA. Since elective courses are not regarded as core academic courses, they are usually excluded from the GPA computation. Examples of such non-core courses include music, theatre and art.

There are policy exceptions when it comes to grades in arts courses, especially if the student is applying to conservatories of music, art, or performance.

Colleges use GPA recalibration scales to standardize the diverse grading systems across high schools. One standard is the unweighted 4.0 scale, where an "A" equals 4 points, a "B" equals 3 points, a "C" equals 2 points, and so forth. Plus or minus grades equate to an addition or subtraction of 0.3 quality points.

In recognition of the additional challenge of rigorous courses, colleges typically assign additional "weight" based on their perceived level of difficulty. Hence, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), honors, or dual enrollment courses are often given more quality points in the recalculated GPA. These bonus points can range from 0.5 to 1.0, reflecting the increased difficulty of these classes. According to this model, an A (4 points) in an AP course translates to 5 quality points (A = 4.0 plus an additional 1.0.for AP level). A B+ (3.3 points) in an Honors course may translate to a 3.8 (B+ = 3.3 plus and an additional 0.5 for Honors level).

THE UPSHOT

This means that the GPA listed on your high school transcript may translate to a different number depending on how the college chooses to recalibrate to account for course rigor. Ultimately, colleges are likely going to look at an A in a college prep class differently from how they would look at the same grade in an honors or AP level course.

A HOLISTIC REVIEW

Yes, GPA matters -- but so do other aspects of your application. (see my earlier blog post on Holistic Admissions. ) You are far more than a number, so the next time you're stressing over that B- in Algebra or kicking yourself for not taking AP Physics, just remember that colleges are looking at the bigger picture of who you are. Beyond tallying up course grades and numbers, they're getting to know you as a student and as a individual. In the end, preparedness of the whole person is what college readiness is all about!

The Many Flavors of Test Optional

The menu of choices continues to expand

It's 2024, and we live in a tutti-frutti world of standardized testing policies and options.

The COVID pandemic had transformed traditional testing requirements into a variety of options designed to serve students, as well as college Admissions Offices tasked with evaluating applicants' preparation for success at their schools.

Prior to COVID, hundreds of schools practiced test-optional admissions, reviewing SAT or ACT scores if submitted but not requiring them. Test-optional policies center around the belief that strong academic potential is not necessarily reflected in standardized testing results.

However, as more and more colleges began to waive testing requirements during the pandemic years, the vast majority have remained test-optional. Today, according to FairTest, the leading advocate for eliminating SAT and ACT testing in college admissions, there are nearly 2000 colleges and universities in the US offering some flavor of test-optional admissions.

So what does "test optional " mean?

Today's testing landscape offers a varied menu of policies. To navigate this diversity, here are some common test-optional approaches:

test optional -- SAT or ACT scores are not required at time of application. For the entering Class of '25, nearly 2000 colleges plan to maintain a current test optional policy.

test free, score free or test blind -- SAT or ACT scores are not considered at time of application, even if an applicant submits a score. A few examples of schools that do not review test scores include:

Among state systems, there can be variability as to testing requirements school to school.

As an example, the University of Georgia system has extended its waiver of testing requirements however excluding flagships such as UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia College and State University.

And international applicants may have different test requirements at any college, usually furnishing TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test scores as evidence of English-language proficiency.

Bottom line

As testing policies continue to morph, students will need to keep an eye on updates so they can put their best foot forward at the time of application.

How to Send SAT Scores to Colleges

Submitting SAT scores involves a few simple steps

For those juniors or seniors who recently sat for the October or November SAT or are planning for the upcoming December test, score results should be available to you in time for submission to colleges with RD, EDII or Rolling deadlines. After scores are back and students review their results, the next step is knowing how to forward those scores to colleges.

How to submit SAT scores?

If you are happy with your results and would like to submit your SAT scores to colleges, log into your College Board account and head to the Sending SAT Scores page via this link.

If you have received a fee waiver code , you will be prompted to add it at that time.

Next, search by name for the individual college(s) to which you wish to submit your scores. You can also search by institution code , but searching by college name is usually faster. Since more than one college may share the same name, be sure that you are choosing the right school to receive your scores. Head to the college's web page to double check location and/or institution code.

Continue by adding colleges to the school recipient list, as appropriate. Review your order, pay the required fee and submit.

Do I need to submit all my scores to colleges?

Good news! For the most part, students are able to choose their best score(s) for submission to colleges. However, it is important to note that colleges maintain their own Score Choice policies, specifying if students have the option to choose which scores to submit -- or if all scores must be submitted. As students input individual colleges into the score order form, the college's score submission policies will pop up.

Does this mean that I can submit individual score sections?

Actually, no. SAT scores are reported in full. It is up to the individual college receiving more than one submitted score to create a "superscore" for the applicant. A superscore reflects the highest recalculated total of the combined Critical Reading and Math portions of the test.

How can I save money on score reporting if I do not have a fee waiver?

There is rarely a need to order score submissions each time a student tests! One can wait until they have achieved a score they wish to report rather than report and pay for every score result.

In other good news, most Common Application colleges allow SAT self-reporting . Applicants can self report their highest Critical Reading and Math scores with corresponding testing dates within the testing section of the Common App. Once an admitted applicant decides to attend their college of choice, they will then be required to submit official test results from the College Board.

Of course, students choosing a test optional approach do not need to report scores at the time of application.

Retesting

If you are confident that by retesting you could yield a higher result, there is always the option of taking advantage of the College Board's four free score reports. At the time of test registration or on in-school test day, students are invited to include four colleges to automatically receive score reports. While this is an upfront cost-saving approach, many students prefer to wait to review their scores prior to submission to colleges.

Financial Matters: The CSS/Profile

Beyond the FAFSA: Completing the CSS/Profile

While completion of the FAFSA is required to be considered for federal financial assistance, the CSS/Profile is required by individual colleges in order for applicants to be considered for institutional financial aid or awards that come from the college's own funds. Institutional aid can be a valuable source of financial assistance , so it is important to complete the CSS/Profile if you are applying to colleges that require it.

According to the College Board, over 300 colleges and universities require or accept the CSS/Profile as part of their financial aid process for some or all of their applicants. This includes a mix of private and public institutions, as well as some international schools.

Note that the CSS/Profile is a more detailed financial aid application than is the FAFSA, the only application required for federal financial aid.

To verify if a particular college or university requires the CSS/Profile, you can check their website or contact their financial aid office for more information.

When do I complete the CSS/Profile?

The CSS/Profile is available beginIng October 1 of the student's senior year. If planning to apply to multiple colleges and universities, be sure to check the deadlines for submitting the CSS/Profile. The deadlines vary from school to school, so it is important to start planning early.

What questions are required by the CSS/Profile?

The CSS/Profile asks applicants a variety of detailed questions about their financial situation . Broadly, these focus on:

Income: applicant's and their parents' income, including wages, salaries, bonuses, investment income, and business income
Assets: applicant's and their parents' assets, including cash, savings, investments, real estate, and businesses
Expenses: applicant's and their parents' expenses, including housing, food, transportation, healthcare, and education

In addition to these general financial questions, the CSS/Profile also asks a number of family and education questions:

Family composition: information about the applicant's parents, siblings, and other dependents
Education costs: information about the applicant's expected tuition, fees, and other education costs for the upcoming year
Financial aid: information about any financial aid that the applicant has already received or applied for

The CSS/Profile takes yet a deeper look into a family's financial situation:

What was your adjusted gross income (AGI) for the most recent tax year?
What is the value of your primary residence?
What is the value of your other real estate holdings?
What is the value of your investments?
How much cash and savings do you have?
How much debt do you have?
What is your monthly mortgage payment?
How much do you spend on food each month?
How much do you spend on transportation each month?
How much do you spend on healthcare each month?
What other financial obligations do you have?
How many people are in your household?
How many of your siblings are attending college at the same time as you?
What is your expected tuition for the upcoming year?
What other financial aid have you received or applied for?

Personal and family finances:

Retirement savings: Do you have a retirement savings account? If so, what is the current balance?
Home equity loans: Do you have a home equity loan? If so, what is the current balance and interest rate?
Vehicles: Do you own any vehicles? If so, what is the make, model, and year of each vehicle?
Business ownership: Do you own any businesses? If so, what is the type and size of each business?
Medical expenses: Do you have any significant medical expenses? If so, what are the estimated costs for the upcoming year?
Additional educational expenses: Do you have any additional educational expenses, such as test preparation fees or tutoring costs?
Income of non-custodial parent: If your parents are divorced or separated, you may be asked to provide information about the income of your non-custodial parent.
Financial support from other sources: If you are receiving financial support from anyone other than your parents, such as grandparents or other relatives, you may be asked to provide information about the amount and source of that support.
Unusual financial circumstances: If you have any unusual financial circumstances, such as a recent job loss or a medical emergency, you may be asked to provide additional information.

Whether or not to answer optional questions on the CSS/Profile is up to you. However, it is generally recommended to answer all of the questions that apply to you, as this will provide colleges with a more complete picture of your financial situation.

Financial support from sources aside from parents:

CSS/Profile applicants are required to report all of the financial support received from other sources for the current school year. This includes any support that you received from grandparents, other relatives, or anyone else. The CSS/Profile uses this information to help colleges determine your financial need and award you financial aid. By reporting all of your financial support, you are helping colleges to get a complete picture of your financial situation.

There are a few exceptions to this rule:

Federal or state government grants or scholarships
Work-study earnings
Loans
Gifts from friends or neighbors

Applying for college can take up as much time as a regular class during the senior year. By preparing a personal essay in advance that can be tailored to different applications, the student can spend more time on studies and extra-curricular activities once school begins.

3. Request recommendation letters

Normally recommendation letters come from junior year teachers who have taught the student for the last full year. Teachers usually appreciate having the extra time over the summer to write a recommendation when the memory of the student’s achievements is fresh.

4. Visit (or plan to visit) campuses

While summer is not the ideal time to visit campuses because there aren’t many students there, this is the time high school students are free and parents’ schedules are usually more flexible. These visits can also be made in the early fall and should include sitting in on a class, looking at the dorm rooms, eating in the cafeteria, and meeting with coaches and professors in areas of interest.

Opportunities still await

It happens. Students may have misjudged what colleges are looking for in successful applicants, or maybe aimed too high in a competitive admissions environment. Perhaps there were admittances to some schools, but the financial aid package was insufficient for your needs so it felt like you came up empty handed.

Missing critical deadlines for submitting materials could also have been the underlying cause behind paltry admissions results. With so many different deadlines -- EA, ED, RD, REA -- the whole college application timeline can feel like an indecipherable alphabet soup.

The Path to Plan B

Fear not - All is not lost! There are opportunities to pursue education for college credit at a local community college or via online colleges. Would-be college applicants can continue their education on an a la carte basis while potentially saving money by continuing to live at home, when possible. When the time comes to reapply for a four-year program, showing up with good grades achieved in community college courses demonstrates to potential colleges strong evidence of your focus, determination and potential. Spend some time researching articulation agreements that community colleges have with in-state universities.

U Mass Amherst, for one, offers guaranteed admission via MassTransfer into a variety of linked programs for Massachusetts community college graduates achieving a minimum final community college GPA and completing designated prerequisite coursework.

Wait -- not all colleges are full?
Every year there are schools that do not reach their enrollment goals and will accept applications into the summer. After May 1, the National Candidate decision day, NACAC publishes a robust list of colleges that may still have openings for qualified freshmen and/or transfer students: College Openings Update . As of this writing, schools such as Goucher, Hofstra, University of North Carolina at Asheville, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and others may still have available seats for both first year students as well as transfers.

Instead of strict application deadlines, some schools with current openings may review applicants on a rolling basis until they reach their enrollment capacity. Their final deadlines tend to be run later than the typical Early or Regular deadlines that most colleges operate by.

Need money to attend? There are potentially some schools on the list that have scholarship or grant funds available for admitted students.

Can I wait and apply again?

Why, yes! Taking time between high school and college to explore other interests in known as pursuing a gap or bridge year. Students take the time to work, pursue meaningful interests, develop academic chops as they prepare to apply to college for the following admission year.

It is never too late to turn educational goals into reality. On the bright side, taking extra time to self evaluate may end up yielding even better opportunities and a set of good-fit schools for a student better prepared than ever to hit the books.

Junior spring semester is here, and that means the college timeline is “getting real.” School breaks and spring days are on the calendar, so it’s time to get out there and explore colleges.

With a solid college list in hand, there is nothing like a feet-on-the-ground look at at least a few campuses of interest, whether it means checking out those located near to home or heading out on the road.

Learning about colleges means exploring below the surface. While it is tempting to focus mainly on cool buildings and facilities featured on campus tours, a worthwhile college visit goes deeper. Time well spent on campus means identifying specifics about how and why a school fits an applicant’s individual interests, goals and vibe.

Before setting out to tour schools, take the time to do some initial investigation via the college’s website; YouTube channel; Instagram; etc. A few minutes of preliminary groundwork to plan ahead for what you most want to see is of greatest interest will help any visitor get the most out of tours and information sessions.

Students should arrive ready to listen and learn as much as possible about academic programs; internship opportunities; application timelines; clubs; social activities; hot issues on campus; and more.

Looking Within

During the campus tour, definitely look around, but also look within. Can you envision yourself living and learning at this college? Take some time to consider the students attending the school. How about hanging out on the weekends with these future classmates? Consider location. Over the long term, is it realistic for you to travel to and from this school, possibly eight times per year, between school semesters and breaks?

Above all, is the cost to attend this school in line with your available finances?

Next, create a vision of yourself at this college by considering specifics personal to you:

Thinking realistically about the student population, how would I engage in classroom learning? Am I able to focus on material presented in large auditorium lecture halls?
If considering a smaller school, is the breadth of studies sufficient for my potential interests? Is there enough for me to engage with, on or off campus, over the next four years?
What kind of community engagement am I looking for in college? What do I want to be similar to – or different from – my high school experience?
If I have any special needs, how will that school’s resources support my success?

Beyond the Tour

Even the most engaging of college tours may not bring you to every significant corner of campus. Include time to go slightly “off the grid” and check out other important features of a school, including:

a typical freshman dorm
library or study space facilities
writing or Academic Resource Center, a useful tool when starting freshman year
a taste of dining hall food. Are there healthy options that fit your needs?
a stop at the Career Center

After the Tour

The most valuable step a student can make is to record their takeaways following their campus visit. What areas of study have piqued your interest? What else stands out? Who else can you speak with to learn even more about this school?

Campus visits are valuable learning experiences, even if some of the schools do not ultimately land on the final go-to list. By comparing and contrasting schools and how they match up with needs and preferences, students and parents can be assured that a carefully crafted list of good-fit colleges will begin to emerge!

I've Been Deferred. Now What Do I Do?

While not an admission, understand that a deferral decision is not a denial! Colleges defer when they are not quite ready to make a decision about an applicant. Admissions may need more information such as updated grades. In other situations, the college may want to review the applicant again in the context of a larger applicant pool, especially if there is an expectation that there will be many more students coming through the Regular Decision cycle.

What's next?

First, if you have been deferred, hang in there. Some schools defer broadly -- it's just their MO, plain and simple. Wondering what to do next? Consider the following:

Are there updates to your Activities list, or special honors or awards to share?

If you have not engaged with schools that count interest, consider being in contact, as appropriate, through a campus visit; request an interview; sign up for a webinar; etc.

Look at your current list one more time with a realistic lens. Do you need to make some readjustments to your college plan?

How are your senior first semester grades looking? These will be an important part of your application re-evaluation.

Above all, keep up your good work so deferring colleges can re-read your solid application later on in the broader application pool.

Waiting can be hard sometimes and the suspense is real, but hang in there and stay strong during the waiting season!

W hen colleges talk about holistic admissions, it means they are looking to learn as much as they can about applicants eager to join their college community. Beyond course grades; college essays; extracurricular activity involvement; and (sometimes) SAT/ACT scores, the Admissions Office cares about how students show up in the broader context of their school or classroom. In addition to their school counselor’s recommendation, colleges commonly ask students to supply a recommendation from an academic subject teacher. A solid teacher recommendation provides admission readers with perspective about student motivation, potential, and character.

A glimpse into a student’s academic potential and character

First and foremost, admission readers want to learn about how an applicant engages with academic subject content. Does the student show a keen interest in classroom topics and conversation? How well does the student grasp deeper concepts? Maybe the student actively supports their classmates’ understanding of the material through thoughtful conversation or clarifying explanations.

An insightful recommendation considers what a classroom member offers their fellow student community and, by extension, might offer their college classmates. Admission readers will be looking beyond basic expectations (ex. works hard; hands in assignments on time), hoping for evidence about how the student distinguishes themselves among peers.

For a solid recommendation, be memorable

Surprise! The strongest recommendation may not necessarily come from the teacher awarding the highest grade! A good recommendation serves up insight that can develop when students seek extra help; show a commitment to learning, or focus on improved performance and solid engagement with the material. Earning the “A” always looks great, but doing so without demonstrating interest in classroom life and content may not give teachers a whole lot to draw from.

Throughout high school, (and especially at the start of junior year!) students should aim to be “positively memorable”: aware of how they “show up” in class, their successes, and challenges, along with what they share with classmates. Students: Ask yourselves, “How do I positively stand out in the group?”

To help their teacher frame a recommendation, a student might offer up examples of what they enjoyed about class or some way the course shaped them. And some teachers ask students to respond to a questionnaire to help kick off their recommendation, asked to weigh in on questions like:

What did you get out of my class this past year?
How have you contributed to your class community?
Name a topic or project that inspired your learning?
What are your college goals?

Which teachers to ask — and how many?

Colleges generally value letters from more recent teachers, typically of full-year 11th grade courses rather than single-semester classes as these teachers often will have more observations to draw from.

There is no one-size-fits-all across application requirements, and the same applies to colleges’ preferences around recommendations. Some schools request letters from two core course teachers while others request a single, but optional letter. Yet others want no recommendations!

Be thoughtful

It’s worth noting that solid rec letters require lead time! The courteous student will ask well in advance – ideally in person – and be sure to sincerely thank their teacher for their time and support. And of course, it’s always thoughtful when students circle back later on with their teachers and share the exciting news about where they will be heading off to college the following year!

Why Apply to a Rolling Admission School?

The joy of an admission decision soon after submitting applications

Most students will likely apply to at least one school with an early deadline . Early deadlines are posted as:

"Early Decision (ED)," a binding commitment to attend if admitted or ...
... its more relaxed cousin, "Early Action (EA)." Early action applications also result in an early admission answer, usually six or so weeks following the application deadline, but without a requirement for admitted applicants to deposit. In some ways, an early action admission policy offers students the best of all worlds: an early response from the college without a contractual commitment to deposit.

Rolling admission timeline

An alternative application process preferred by some colleges is Rolling Admission. Rolling admission schools review applications on a continuous basis, often well in advance of the published deadline. Think of rolling admission as a "first come, first served" timeline in applying to college. Rolling schools admit students until the class reaches capacity.

How rolling admission benefits applicants

As applications roll in, a rolling decision rolls back out, often over a relatively quick 3-4 week turnaround. Students may even hear about scholarship awards with their admitted student letter.

At some rolling schools, applicants receive priority in selecting campus housing (ex. Clemson)

Including a rolling school on the college list is beneficial as a barometer to test the admission waters. Is the student admitted in the early round? Or is the application deferred for a later review after a student demonstrates improved future academic performance?

Admitted in the early to mid-fall to a rolling admission college? What a stress reliever to receive an admission offer even before ED or EA decisions are released in November -- let alone regular decisions released in March!

When to apply

Early birds are more likely to get the worm at rolling schools. For the best access to a spot:

apply early in the admission cycle before the majority of seats are spoken for. Aim for late summer or early fall of senior year, when possible.
observe any priority deadlines for scholarship consideration
submit when the application is fully prepared and at its best

Which schools offer rolling admission

Some popular rolling admission schools include: Penn State; Arizona State; University of Alabama Huntsville, University of Missouri; and dozens more.

Another, the University of Pittsburgh, has this to say about rolling admissions at their institution: The University of Pittsburgh is on a rolling admissions schedule, and it is to your advantage to apply early. This will increase your chances for admission in our competitive applicant pool.

Applying to the UCs

The nine campuses in the University of California system evaluate applications across 13 different parameters - but not SAT/ACT scores

Did you know that the UCs evaluate applications across 13 different parameters -- but SAT/ACT scores are not among them? As of 2020, the University of California system adopted a test-blind policy that disregards standardized test results in their admission process. AP or IB scores, however, continue to be considered.

The 13 Factors

While "Saturday morning" test scores are no longer part of the admissions conversation at the nine different UC campuses, instead focus is on 13 individual aspects that students present in their applications. While strong academic performance is the foundation of a successful application as seen through strong curriculum and grades, a number of non-academic factors are also taken into account.

The UC system practices a fully comprehensive application review. Evaluations go well beyond classroom performance and include recognition of personal character traits such as leadership; contribution; and academic success in context of one's school environment or special circumstances. All factors are taken into consideration at each of the UCs, but individual campuses weight those factors differently.

As no two campuses are alike, applicants are wise to look at the selection process at each campus individually.

Other Differences: The PIQs -- Personal Insight Questions

Instead of the oft-used Common Application personal statement, UC applicants are required to respond to 4 of the 8 Personal Insight Questions . The prompts behind these are designed to elicit responses that reflect the invidual characteristics and experiences that highlight each applicant. Since the SAT/ACT is not part of the admission review, the PIQ essays take on more importance, and applicants are wise to spend some time carefully laying out how their responses reflect their strengths and unique experiences.

Some of the qualities or experiences that the PIQs encompass include:

Leadership
Creativity or problem solving
Talent or skill
Educational opportunity
Personal challenge that has impacted education
Community contribution
Unique individual quality that demonstrates strong candidacy for the University of California

More About the Numbers

Campuses differ in the volume of applications each receives. UCLA and UC Berkeley typically receive the greatest number of applications, resulting in admission rates well under 25%. Other schools in the system, including UC Riverside and UC Merced admit the majority of their applicants. More specifics about individual campus admission data can be found here.

Beyond the Golden State

Out-of-state students are welcome at the UCs. However, as a public institution serving residents of California, priority is placed on admission for in-state residents. Details about admission requirements for out-of-state applicants indicate necessary GPA minimums, and that letters of recommendation are rarely read. AP courses are given extra weight in calculating the GPA, but honors courses do not.

In addition to transcripts, test scores and application essays, colleges commonly ask applicants to supply a recommendation from an academic subject teacher. A good teacher recommendation provides admission readers with an inside-the-classroom perspective about the student.

And it is preferable for recommendations to come from teachers in full-year courses rather than single-semester classes because longer-term teachers typically will have more observations to draw from.

Colleges vary in their application requirements and guidelines, so unsurprisingly there is also variety in preferences around recommendations. Some schools request two academic teacher recommendations, while others ask for a single optional rec. Still others (the University of California system, for one) do not want to receive recommendations at all. It's important to pinpoint what an applicant's specific colleges are looking for.

Confirming evidence

Simply, a teacher recommendation is confirming evidence of a student's academic strength shared through a narrative. A well-written recommendation serves to confirm grades achieved and lends further insight to a student's individual academic participation and impact.

Common App 2022-23 Essay Prompts to Remain the Same

Last year's seven prompts are baack!

While it may be just a little early for juniors to take that deep dive into application season, the Common App has nonetheless announced their plans for the 2022-23 application season. Last year's essay prompts will return, allowing applicants to choose among seven excellent options, including the ever-popular #7, "topic of your choice."

The optional COVID-19 question also returns this year, available in the Additional Information section of the application. Here, students have an opportunity to share information about personal COVID-19 impacts in their lives.

The seven choices available to students are:

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

What Is the Meaning of Test-Blind Admissions?

The meaning of "test-blind" or "score-free" admissions

AS COLLEGES continue to evaluate the value of standardized testing scores in determining an applicant's school fit and likelihood for success , test optional policies are becoming more and more common. While a number of schools, including "highly selectives" such as Bates and Wake Forest have been test optional for years, the broader adoption of such policies has greatly accelerated with the onset of COVID and the attending challenges in sitting for the SAT or ACT. Test-optional colleges declare if a student has a test score in hand, it will fully be the applicant's choice to submit or omit scores as part of their application.

A new flavor of test optional

A growing group of colleges has taken the "test optional" philosophy a little farther by completely removing the testing requirement for applicants. With more schools becoming focused on an applicant's track record of academic achievement and extracurricular involvements and less reliant on standardized testing as evidence of college readiness, a few have made it their policy to completely disregard the SAT or ACT at the time of application review.

These schools have adopted an admissions policy that is "t est blind, test free or score free."

Without the SAT or ACT, then what?

Without standardized test scores to lean into, colleges will place greater focus on students' high school experience, reading for:

- curriculum rigor and grades earned

- consistency of grades supported by an upward trend

- a full and challenging senior schedule of courses

- involvement in school, community or individual pursuits outside of the classroom

- a student's personal characteristics or unique perspective

- sense of fit with the mission of a college

- class rank, if provided

Which colleges are test blind or score free?

Colleges may focus their test-free application evaluations according to different parameters. A few examples can be found through schools such as The University of Washington - Seattle and Worcester Polytechnic (WPI) or Dickinson . At this time, note that some of the test-blind schools have completely removed the testing requirement from all future applications, while others are piloting this new approach for one or more admissions cycles to evaluate how well the shift predicts students' performance and success at their institutions.

Tips and strategies to tackle the Reading Section

The ACT is commonly known at the "sprint" test: Test takers need to move quickly and steadily to make it through the race. Of the four required sections of the ACT, including Math, Reading, English and Science plus the optional essay, the Reading section typically challenges students' pacing and focus. With 35 minutes available to answer 40 supporting-evidence questions across several passages, test takers need to rely on their skills in efficient and active reading to achieve solid performance in this section.

Making the most of college visits means digging deeper with good questions

Now that campuses in some regions are slowly opening up and allowing in-person visits, prospective students now have a window of opportunity to ask tour guides, students and -- themselves -- incisive questions.

For sure, most college campuses present themselves as attractive and dynamic places to spend four years between high school and adulthood, Still, that sense of personal fit is essential to a student's purpose, happiness and success at college. What do you observe as you look around? How do you see yourself engaging on a daily basis -- and where and with whom? What are you excited to accomplish as an active member of the college community?

12. Can my family and I realistically afford to pay for tuition, room, board and other expenses at this college for each of four years?

13. Can I reach this campus from my hometown without too much hassle?

14. What kind of academic advising will I receive? Career advising?

15. What vibe am I getting from students? Does the level of energy fit with what I’m looking for in my college experience?

Checking Out Campuses During COVID

For current juniors and seniors, the notion of touring colleges in-person at this time can feel like a fantasy. Schools vary greatly as to how they are able to receive visitors and set up in-person tours -- and they may shift gears on a dime depending on local conditions.

No doubt that seeing a college in person helps a high schooler to imagine themselves in the school environment, studying and socializing among a community of peers and building connections. Viewing classes in progress, checking out the dining hall, peeking into dorms gives visiting students a view into the vibrancy and vibe of the school.

While schools are generally restricting in-person events to support community safety, it is fortunate that prospective students and families can still visit through virtual platforms. Let your "fingertips do the walking" by logging into schools' admission pages for events that welcome distance visitors to interact and learn about the campus experience.

Some great virtual tour experiences can be found at UMass Amherst , University of Miami, Auburn University , Dartmouth to name just a few. The same can be found at hundreds of other campuses nationally and internationally.

Even with campus closures the norm for now, with a few keyboard clicks you'll be virtually there!

FREE Resources! Prepping for SAT and ACT

Which test is best for your student? Find out through FREE test preparation and practice tools.

If there is one positive note to sitting for the SAT and ACT, it is that there are plenty of FREE resources out there to familiarize students with content before test day!

Know Before You Go

While the SAT and ACT share a lot of similarities, in several important ways they are quite different. To help a student decide on which of the two tests is best for them, trying out a few sample questions from both the SAT and the ACT is a smart way to start. Note that the primary differences between the SAT and ACT take shape within these areas:

the content tested in THE Math section

ACT tests more geometry; required students to know formulas by heart; permits calculator usage. The SAT focuses more on algebra and supplies necessary geometry and algebra formulas; one Math section permits a calculator and another prohibits calculator usage.

the Science section in the ACT

T he ACT's designated Science section tests interpretation and reasoning skills in the context of scientific data, charts and graphs. In contrast, the SAT sprinkles science-related topics throughout the test.

time permitted per question

While both tests are approximately three hours in length, the SAT allows more time per question when compared to the ACT.

the pacing of the test

The ACT is a faster-paced test and requires test takers to move at a sprinting pace. The ACT's four topic areas are presented in singular, larger chunks. The SAT alternates verbal and quantitative reasoning in shorter, repeating sections.

While some students feel quite certain about which of the tests is a better fit given their high school preparation and individual testing style, others may feel that they could go either way. Some are ok with taking one of each to determine which is likely to yield the highest score possible. But first, why not try out a few sample sections from each of the tests to get a sense of how they feel?

HELPFUL TOOLS for PREPPING AHEAD

Second semester of junior year is now underway! Juniors are busy with prepping for the SAT or ACT ; researching colleges; planning for that anticipated summer off from school -- and a whole lot in between!

A Guide for 9th and 10th Graders

Making the most of early high school years

For students currently in 9th and 10th grades , the start of high school might appear like a dress rehearsal for the junior and senior years and a time when the very notion of "college" feels like a faraway point on the horizon. But as distant as college applications may seem, beginning high school on the right foot sets the stage for what is to come well before a student even begins to seriously focus on their college process.

Developing good organization and study habits, engaging in interests outside of the classroom, connecting with teachers and learning where to find support when needed are important for building the foundation to a positive high school experience.

Academic skills and development of the whole person go hand in hand. Good mentoring is key as students set forth on their high school experience.

A checklist and a guide

From the very first day of high school, grades matter ! What students achieve in 9th and 10th grades count equally toward both the overall grade point average and class rank (at those schools that calculate class rank) as do grades earned later in high school. Support a solid GPA from the very first day of high school.

Take the time to think about which subject areas appeal to your teen and how these connect to a student's natural strengths and curiosities.

The same guidance applies as the topic of a "possible" college major arises. Consider a teen's i ndividual strengths coupled with interests to guide a discussion on college pursuits.

If possible, students in 10th grade should consider sitting for the PSAT or PreACT . While scores from these early tests are not directly pertinent to college applications, early exposure provides good practice for later standardized testing.

It's worth spending some time online researching college admission requirements . Colleges vary in their application requirements and course recommendations, at times dependent on selected majors. For example, engineering aspirants are wise to pursue the highest math level they can manage. In other scenarios, foreign language recommendations may range from none to up to 4 years of the same language.

Consider where non-academic interests lie. Is a student an athlete or into the world of sports? All about social justice and standing up for others' rights? Maybe they are creative and dream in bright colors or think in eloquent language.

Encourage teens to try on new experiences. For example, there is always a demand for students to take part in clubs, fundraisers, events, etc. that could use their participation and fresh energy!

Leaders are not built in a day. Ninth and 10th graders might keep an eye on the leadership positions they may want to later take on in clubs, teams or creative groups. Underclassmen will become juniors and seniors soon enough, so set the stage for stepping up.

Maybe there is mentorship available through scheduled conversations with generous adults willing to share their professional perspectives. Consider local organizations; professionals; coaches; other people you know.

Begin a discussion of what kinds of college environments might best suit your student. For example, would they thrive in a smaller, liberal arts environment or enjoy the breadth of opportunities at a large university?

Consider making initial, low-key visits to local colleges. A drive-by visit is a great way to get a view of what a college campus looks and feels like.

Web-based resources are at your disposal! Most colleges have a dedicated YouTube channel to check out or even recorded information sessions that families can log into at any time.

Students who are willing to f ind ways to get to know their teachers through extra help sessions, offering a hand to organize class materials can kick off conversations that could knock down barriers and build a more relaxed connection.

By getting to know their school counselor early on, a student can seek advice about classes to pursue that connect to their interests and abilities.

Help your student to learn the best way to manage stress early on. When there are pinch points, often during study or exam periods, figuring out how to positively deal with pressure is a skill that serves students throughout high school and into college and adulthood.

Four-plus months into the school year, and juniors are beginning to look at to how navigate their path toward college.

The college process begins with building a foundation based on a solid high school curriculum, developing personal insight as to how one learns best, determining the social environment that suits the student into young adulthood and, of course, evaluating affordability.

Wrapping up well in 2020 sets students on the right path for rest of the school year

Early December greetings!!

Amazing how much students have already accomplished and managed within just a few months after starting school this fall! With less than one month remaining in this extraordinary year, there are several important steps and to-do’s worth sharing before the calendar turns to 2021. No matter which high school year is “your" year, do read down the list below and see what personally resonates with how you’d like to wrap up this month and anticipate the new year!

Seniors

Continue to work on any remaining applications at this time. Even if awaiting imminent ED application decisions, it is smart to be drafting remaining RD essays so you are not caught under time pressure later this month to complete your remaining writing. Deadlines are not the same as due dates. Avoid working to the last minute and instead aim for an uncluttered and relaxing holiday break!

For those students who have begun to hear back about decisions from their early or rolling colleges — congratulations on admissions achieved! But even if you’ve been admitted to your college(s) of choice, colleges will want to see final senior transcripts, so maintaining good grades throughout senior year is important. Colleges have been know to rescind admission in light of significant grade drops or change in curriculum.

FAFSA applications (and possibly the CSS/Profile ) should be underway or already submitted if planning on applying for need-based financial assistance. In considering cost of attendance, be sure to review the Net Price Calculator located on each college's Financial Assistance webpage.

Juniors

Continue to build your academic strengths, whether you are learning in-person or over Google Hangouts.

Sophomores

Before you know it, junior year course selection will be on your to-do list. As a sophomore continuing to develop academic strengths, consider the right level of classroom challenge for you along with the junior year courses you might enroll in.

If you tried the PSAT this year, expect results to arrive soon. Have a look at these scores with an eye toward a testing path for junior year.

Think about how you could use your budding leadership or service skills to help others in your community and develop your “story.” By putting energies toward supporting others, you will also be investing in yourself as well as building hours toward your high school or National Honor Society service requirements.

The College Interview Season Is in Full Swing for Seniors

An opportunity to share more of your unique self

The college interview is intended to be an exploratory conversation between the student and a member of the Admissions team to add more context to the applicant and their "story." Commonly, college interviews take place with a representative from the Admissions Office, a current student or an active alum. Depending on the college's approach to application review, the interview conversation might be purely a friendly, informational exchange. In contrast, an evaluative meeting aims to help the interviewer develop feedback to add to the applicant's file.

With over twenty years' experience as a Cornell University volunteer interviewer, for me meeting with prospective students has been all about interesting conversations. Learning about applicants' interest in attending my alma mater -- while sharing their plans and passions -- made for an engaging step in the college application process.

Showing up to an interview appropriately prepared not only supports an applicant in sharing their individual interests and experiences, but doing so also smooths the way to a more fluid exchange . Some solid self-reflection before sitting for the one-to-one conversation helps to build confidence in conveying a student's most significant qualities and experiences. And building interviewing skills is not limited to the college process. Job searches -- internships -- scholarship competitions also rest on great interview conversations!

The college application season is in full swing

Hey Seniors -- Congratulations on completing your first rounds of applications...AND signing off on the first quarter of this school year. Stop to take a look at what you have accomplished over these last few months. Y ou have a lot to be proud of!

Whether you have already submitted to colleges via a Rolling, Early Action or Early Decision (binding agreement) you've taken your most important step on your journey to college admission . But hold on for a moment -- you are not done yet! Here are some very important reminders about next steps on the path to college:

Once colleges receive and upload an application, access opens to an individualized online student portal. Here, students can check application status and update their file with new information as it becomes available ex. new test scores; updated awards or honors; etc.

Students who recently re-took the SAT or ACT should consider if the results might boost their candidacy. If so, updating colleges is a good move.

Following application submission, it can take some time for the various components to be recorded, especially pieces that are sent from the high school such as transcripts or teacher recommendations. Although it can be bit nerve wracking to see that some elements are moving on the slower road, it is advisable to be patient but continue checking back.

If after 7-10 days or so the application remains marked as incomplete , it is a good idea to email or call the college Admission Office. Give this some time as it may take several days for schools to digitally match e-documents with an application.

For those students who have not yet investigated a school prior to application submission, it is not too late to demonstrate interest! Applicants can be in touch directly with the regional representative, Admissions Office or sign up for virtual presentations to support their school research.

Interview opportunities may automatically be offered at some (though not most) colleges. At others, applicants need be proactive about interview scheduling.

Applicants who have submitted a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will receive a SAR (Student Aid Report). This is the time to check for any missing or incorrect information

LATER DEADLINES

Following the “early rounds,” most but not all colleges offer Regular Decision or Rolling options. Others may offer an Early Action II or Early Decision II, providing an additional opportunity to apply before year end and receive an early response .

At this time, all applicants ought to take a brief but well-deserved exhale even if still finishing the first academic quarter or trimester -- then get ready for the next set of applications to go... .

It's All About Teacher Recommendations

Umm — Mr. Morgan? Requesting teacher recommendations

As senior year emerges on the horizon, Recommendation Season draws near. This is the time when teachers, not typically accustomed to students seeking them out over summer break, find that in this COVID year many are touching base now with a shy “ask." More often than not, the response to the recommendation request will be, “Yes, I would be delighted to write a college recommendation for you.”

Whom to Ask

Students should aim for a recommendation from a classroom teacher in academic subjects such as english; math; science; foreign language; history -- preferably from junior year. If a student does not have a solid recommender from junior year, it is acceptable to ask a sophomore year teacher. But considering how much a student has likely matured and developed since 10th grade, a recommendation based on academic life from that far back may come off as outdated.

For students who feel confident in their classroom performance and enjoy a rapport with their teacher, requesting a recommendation may feel natural. For those high schoolers who have not yet made those strong connections, there is still an opportunity to consider what they have gained from the class, how it connects to their present or future interests, and share that personal insight with a teacher or two.

How Many Recs to Request?

Colleges vary significantly as to the number of recommendations they welcome. There is a surprising range of policies around this element of the college application, ranging anywhere from one optional recommendation from a school counselor to allowing upwards of five letters from various sources. So what's the norm? Within the scope of recommendations, schools commonly request 1- 2 recommendations from teachers in academic “solid” classes rather than electives. Additional outside recommendations may come from employers; coaches; volunteer coordinators — anyone who has known the student in a context that allows comment based on personal qualities such as leadership; maturity; character and more. Is there such as things as too many recommendations? Yes, and it's easy for students and parents to be tempted to invite everyone from the student's recent past to write on their behalf. In the orbit of college recommendations, the concept of "less is more" rings quite true. Each recommendation should say something substantial about the student that lends, most importantly, insight into academic ability, determination, character, curiosity.

What A Good Rec Sounds Like

It may surprise students to learn that a solid recommendation does not always come from the student’s highest performing class. Qualities in evidence may include engagement; work ethic, contribution to the class’s learning; attitude and drive. Student’s certainly don’t have to earn an A+ to demonstrate these strengths! Often it is the student who has sought extra help outside the classroom or who has struggled through some part of the curriculum and persevered who ends up showing what they are made of.

When to Ask

Asking early in senior year rather than up against a last-minute deadline demonstrates maturity as well as thoughtful appreciation of the rec writer’s time and effort. Junior spring is a great time to approach teachers, when junior year progress is fresh in the teacher’s mind and the student still has time to boost engagement in the classroom. Some teachers prefer that students make their requests at the beginning of senior year.

How to Ask

Requesting teachers recommendations is best done in person. During our current pandemic, when schools are out of session, it’s ok to ask by email. If in doubt, ask the teacher when and how they would like the request delivered. While it seems obvious, students should make a point to thank their teacher.

You may follow up or thank a recommender in person, via email or — as an even more personal gesture — through a handwritten note. During times of social distancing, it's heartening to receive something more personal than an electronic communication!

Perspective and Paying It Forward

While sometimes students agonize over whom to ask and what that teacher may say in their rec, keep in mind that teachers want to support a candidacy. They've been there themselves, and want to see their students advance to their next level of education. C olleges review applications in their entirety, and recommendations are one piece of the multi-piece puzzle. Students: Be sure to thank Mr. Morgan for his time now — and check back in later on during senior year to let him know where you’ll be headed the following fall. This way, you’ll pay it forward, setting the stage for the next group of juniors coming up behind you.

The ACT's Fall Testing Opportunities

Five new test dates for fall 2020

ACT UPDATE : On Monday, July 27 ACT attempted a large-scale registration to accommodate the thousands of students who have been impacted by test site cancellations resulting from the covid pandemic. Due to an unprecedented registration demand, the ACT registration site became overwhelmed and was thus forced to close before many students were able to successfully register.

The current plan is to open MyACT for 2020-2021 test registration on Monday, August 3 at 10am CT, 11am EST

PRIOR:

In an unprecedented move, ACT has announced the availability of three additional test dates for a total of eight possible test dates in fall of 2020. Recognizing the recent impacts on testing opportunities as a result of the current Covid-19 crisis, the new testing schedule offers students one additional new test date in September and two in October .

In an effort to provide additional access to testing, Sunday testing will now be available to all ACT test takers. Previously, Sunday testing had been reserved for students unable to take part in Saturday testing for reasons of religious observance.

The ACT testing schedule for the remainder of 2020 looks like this, with registration opening in July;

Watching the Ivy League Become Test-Optional

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Brown, U Penn, Columbia and Dartmouth have made the SAT and ACT optional for their 2020-21 applicants

Given limited availability of standardized testing dates and locales due to impacts of the novel corona virus , students applying to college this upcoming admissions cycle have seen dozens of colleges and universities announce standardized testing policy shifts.

Most of the changes point to a one-year hiatus from requiring SAT or ACT scores , while some schools expand their pilot of test optional programs from one to three years in duration. Still, others have determined that standardized testing results will no longer play a role in evaluating applicants for admission, thereby resulting in test-blind reviews.

Yet, the most noteworthy shift has taken place in the Ivy League as each of the 8 colleges and universities has announced that they will pause requirements of standardized testing scores for students applying to college this fall. The trend started with Cornell declaring their test-optional stance on April 22. June 18 saw Princeton become the most recent and final Ivy to announce a temporary test-optional policy.

SAT Subject Tests will also be optional , with Yale declaring they will disregard subject test scores in their review. Current Ivy League policies for standardized testing can be found here.

Do I Need to Write the Optional SAT Essay?

The optional SAT essay , requiring an additional 50 minutes of test takers' time, focus and energy, is swiftly becoming an artifact.

Like the vestigial human appendix, at one point in time this component of the standardized testing landscape had its purpose. Today, more often than not, the essay score is simply disregarded, serving no true function in evaluating applicants, so says the testing policy at the vast majority of colleges and universities. Still, every year we grapple with the wisdom of signing up for the optional essay.

Testing Requirements Run the Gamut

How should students approach the decision of whether or not to sit for the optional essay? General wisdom has long suggested that the smart and safe move would be to write the essay because without it colleges that do require this component will regard the main two-part SAT score, consisting of Evidence-Based Reading and Writing plus Math , to be incomplete.

So what are the policies that colleges hold around the essay? Schools such as Bates, NYU, Quinnipiac, Connecticut College, UConn neither require nor recommend the optional essay and will not consider its score at the time of application review. No longer does the College of Charleston or Occidental even recommend the essay, a relatively recent change. As of last year, Duke stopped requiring it. None of the Ivies require the essay. So who does ?

Primarily, the University of California system institutions (ex. UCLA; UC San Diego; etc.) and Stanford still ask for the essay. A student applying to these schools will need to submit their essay score in order to complete their application.

Future Tense

Another possible rationale behind writing the essay is as a back-up in the event a student later decides to transfer colleges, and the destination college is one that requires the SAT essay score for admission -- including transfer admission. Without a complete score, the SAT two-part score may be regarded as insufficient.

International applicants whose language of instruction is not English may consider writing the essay to lend another perspective to their TOEFL or IELTS score.

In the present timeframe, if a student feels that they will likely have remaining mental focus to satisfactorily write the essay after completing the main SAT sections, then they might just pay the extra $15 fee and register for the essay. And after once completing the essay and if satisfied with the two-part score, the student may not need to write the essay again in future testing scenarios. In other words, when it comes to the essay more often than not it's " one and done ."

College Planning in "What If?" Times

This time of Covid has brought each of us a slew of uninvited challenges. Business as usual no longer has meaning because there is no ‘usual.’ Improvisation and guesswork have now become the drivers behind planning and direction. But because solid planning is forged on educated experience — and no one living today has experienced anything like the environment we are currently living in — our planning needs to emerge through ‘what-if?’ scenarios, followed by the ‘what thens?’

So what if I am a rising high school senior and unable to physically visit colleges I am seriously interested in? What if I am unable to re-take the SAT or ACT? What do I do if I was planning on ED or EA applications to the colleges that still require standardized testing scores? What if my parent lost her job and college affordability has become an increasingly looming question? What if my style of learning does not jibe well with an online classroom?

Still, even difficult-to-answer questions deserve thoughtful answers. Be in touch if I can support your college process with clarity and calm to diminish the confusion that comes with confusing times. I will do my best to share with you what I am learning -- and avoid the guesswork.

Despite living in COVID-19 times it's still Junior Spring , and it’s time to “tour!”

Now is a great time to visit college campuses , even if you are doing so from the comfort of your living room chair. Most colleges are closed and we are sheltering in place, but there is much you can research through the many virtual resources colleges are offering prospective students. If you cannot travel to colleges this spring, the colleges want to come to you!

Here are some tips to help guide you as you explore:

Step 1: On the college’s website, click on Undergraduate Admissions and/or Visit Us .

Step 2: Sign up for a virtual information session . An information session webinar is an excellent way to learn more about a college’s academic programs, active student life, and how to navigate the admission and financial aid process.

These virtual information sessions are typically led by a member of the Admissions Department together with a current student, followed by Q&A via live chat.

Step 3: Take a virtual tour . Each college will offer different types of tours. Many will ask for your contact information (fill that out). Some (like UMASS), offer custom tours based on student interests. Through virtual tours, you can get a closer look at different parts of the campus using interactive maps and other tools. Signing up for virtual tours may help you to demonstrate early interest with that school!

Step 4: Explore the Academics pages. If you have a particular major or subject area you are interested in, spend time looking at courses you would be taking. Basic course information is often available via the online catalog, usually by major.

You can read short descriptions of current classes or learn about frequently-offered elective classes for each major . This can help you decide if this program is the right fit for you AND HELP INFORM ANY REQUIRED SHORT ESSAYS ON WHY YOU WANT TO ATTEND THAT COLLEGE.

Step 5 : Explore site sections such as: Student Life . Look at Housing and Residential Life, Dining Options, Athletics/Intramurals, Clubs and Organizations, Student Government, Diversity Groups -- the more you find that interests you can help you decide if you want to include this college on your list.

Step 6: Investigate Support Services to learn about the services and resources available to help students succeed. Academic support can include tutoring, writing assistance and study skills courses . Other support may include assistance with the financial aid process, counseling and career-planning services.

Step 7: Look at what the college requires and what is important in the application process. Then look at Naviance scattergrams to determine whether or not the school falls in as a Realistic, Reach or Likely school .

Want to REALLY know what goes on with the student body?

● Dig into social media accounts that aren't formal feeds from the Admissions Office. Look for posts by student groups, academic departments, athletic teams, etc . on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn , etc. This is a great way to find out about the true, organic culture of the school.

● A college's newspaper can reveal current issues and introduce you to a campus's activities. What types of stories do current students report on? What local events get coverage? College papers can also give you a feel for the level of student thinking and writing on campus.

● If you want to talk to someone who really knows a college, use online resources to look up the contact information for a lumni and current students . You can send emails requesting an interview or just ask questions. Some colleges even have live chat rooms in which prospective students can mingle with current students.

Keeping track of your virtual tours

You might want to create a Google doc for each college you tour to capture the important information you have spent time researching . Keep these organized so that you can easily access your notes when it comes time to applying to that college. Taking good notes now-- and thinking about how you would specifically engage at that school -- will serve you well as you consider your favorite go-to colleges!

Virtual college fairs - webinars - FaceBook Live events -- there are copious opportunities for curious juniors -- and even seniors -- to continue a fruitful college search .

Connecting with college representatives and current students in person is preferable to making socially-distant connections, but face it: A junior has to do what a junior has to do. Fortunately, there are loads of colleges out there kicking off ways to connect with prospects. There is endless information available to curious parents and students involved in the college search process !

Learning starts with asking good questions , but what sorts of questions are useful for getting more out of online college presentations ? And after all, aren't college websites full of information?

The Swing to Test Optional Policies

( UPDATED 6/25/20) In response to stay-at-home orders impacting thousands of student across the US as well as around the world, scores of colleges have announced changes to their standardized testing admissions policies .

Recognizing that high school juniors are facing diminished opportunities to take the SAT , ACT as well as IB examinations , there have been substantial conversations concerning what is now deemed essential to evaluating candidacy for admission at individual institutions.

While the test optional movement has been rapidly accelerating over the last several years, the current worldwide pandemic has forced the hand of admission offices everywhere to recheck their policies . As of this writing, over 1100 colleges and universities do not require SAT or ACT testing as an admission requirement . To access the full and continually evolving list of test optional colleges and universities, visit The National Center for Fair and Open Testing at www.fairtest.org .

Still, a test optional approach to application review does not mean “test blind.” For a student who has already tested to their satisfaction or plans to continue testing once community health conditions predict safe social gathering, it may make sense to continue on a testing path in order to present best possible scores at the time of application.

A number of colleges have established variations of test optional policies, including: one-year trials, three-year trials ; shifting from a prior test flexible# policy to one in which standardized tests are no longer required for review , as well as policies fully embracing a test optional philosophy. Schools with test optional policies assert that do not need to rely on SAT or ACT scores because they receive sufficient information within a student's application to render an admissions decision , including classes taken , grades, curriculum rigor, activities, essays and teacher and/or counselor recommendations .

Note that international applicants may still be required to produce some form of standardized test results, including English language competency scores through TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo.

This spring, the "granddaddy" of area college fairs, NACAC Boston National Fair 2020 , will be coming to town from T hursday, April 30 - Friday, May 1.

This widely-anticipated event expects to host more than 350 two-year and four-year colleges, nursing schools, business schools and trade schools at the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority located at 415 Summer Street, Boston.

Top 12 Tips for Campus Visit Success

What? Already? The campus tour season is here. As you check out colleges during break and beyond, be intentional and make the most of time invested on the road. Solid planning makes for worthwhile (and memorable) on-the-ground college research.

Looking to get the most out of exploring colleges? Check out these top suggestions for campus visit success:

Register ahead via the campus website for information sessions and tours. Some colleges receive many hundreds of visitors in a week, and spaces may fill up. If you need to cancel a reservation, contact the school so a spot can open for another visitor.
Sign in when you arrive to campus so there is a record of you having taken the time to visit. This will also ensure you a spot on the school mailing list.
Allow yourselves plenty of time to arrive and, most of all, to park and find the Admission Office. Do not assume that parking and the Admission Office are close to one another. And don’t assume that a tour or information session will take place at the Admission building.
Even though it may sound obvious, wear comfortable footwear and bring a snack or drink with you as touring can tax one’s energy. Keep up the blood sugar.
Bring extra pairs of dry socks (seriously). Even if shoes get wet in the rain, you will be much more comfortable if you at least can pull on dry socks for the next tour.
Capture several photos of campus and nearby town , maybe even with you in them. Photographic images evoke deeper memories.
If you do not have time for both tour and information session, prioritize the tour .
Don’t be shy about stopping a couple of friendly-looking students and saying something like: “ Hi, I’m visiting today and wanted to get some thoughts about what students here think of X College. So what year are you in and what are you studying here? What are a few favorite things for you about your school?”
Check out food places; fitness center; Career Center; Student Success Services or "Disability” Office; library; etc . if these are not included on your tour.
Peek at posted signs; notices — anything that tells you what is being promoted or talked about at that school.
If financial assistance is part of your college process, ask if admission is “ need blind ” or “ need aware .” This will tell you how much the school considers demonstrated financial need when evaluating applications. You could also ask what % of demonstrated need the college will meet. If the school meets 75% of your demonstrated need, that means that the rest will be up to you to obtain.
If the school says they offer merit awards , ask which financial applications, special essays, if any, need to be completed to be eligible for merit aid.

A growing number of students are receiving admission to sought-after colleges -- just not in the fall.

For years some northeastern elite colleges, including Middlebury and Hamilton , have engaged in an admissions practice offering a selection of students second semester admission . Midd "Febs" and Hamilton "Jans" share a mid-year enrollment calendar with a number of other highly-selective colleges and universities.

Same College, Alternative Path In

Today, students applying to a handful of schools on both coasts might see their admission offers contingent on an unanticipated timeline. A sampling of schools and programs potentially offering applicants a later freshman start include:

The Spring Difference

Top-of-mind questions for second semester admits concerns the impact of a spring start on forging solid social connections . What will campus life be like for the new group joining established classmates who have been living and learning together on campus since fall orientation?

Students who begin college via the second semester option tend to report that their smaller cohort provides them with a more intimate, bonded social experience at their start of college. A strong January campus orientation program can serve to support those connections.

Sometimes a later start incorporates a first semester international experience , the destination country compatible with the student's intended major. Participants bring these closer connections back with them to campus in January.

An organized program, such as the University of Maryland - College Park's Freshman Connection , offers spring admits an optional opportunity for a fall start , living on campus while choosing from selected classes. In contrast, other schools may leave the choice of fall programming entirely up to the student , potentially involving employment, volunteerism , or community college classes for credit.

Cornell University's First Year Spring Admit (FYSA) program admits up to 50 students as "January freshmen," while recommending pursuit of enriching extramural involvements prior to arriving in Ithaca for spring semester.

Regardless of the entry date, the premise supporting a January start is enrichment for the student prior to the start of college, bringing even greater anticipation and readiness for their educational experience.

Indiana University's Flagship Goes Test Optional

Indiana University's flagship campus in Bloomington, IN has said "no thanks" to requiring SAT or ACT in admissions evaluations. IU has now joined six other campuses in its state system in the test optional movement .

According to IU Admissions, the university has observed that GPA performance in high school is the best predictor of college success, and that standardized test scores typically reflect the economic resources that students are able to invest in test prep.

Students applying to IU in 2020 will not be required to submit test scores with their applications.

In an era of non-stop texting, instant messaging and SnapChat , for our students email is soooo 20th-century.

While email remains the preferred mode of communication in the professional world, it seems our Generation Z would prefer to keep things briefer.

Because Email

The importance of juniors learning to get with their email account begins to accelerate once the college process kicks off. Frequent touch points with one's email account begin to take on new importance. Standardized testing registrations; financial aid application notifications ; and not to mention actual decisions rendered by colleges , typically arrive through an email platform. A high school junior or senior's daily touch point with their email account becomes important. At least 3 - 4 inbox visits per week is my recommendation for even the most email-phobic teen.

Too Much of A Good Thing

Ironically, part of the reason college applicants are squeamish about opening their inboxes is the overwhelming amount of communications generated by the colleges themselves. Kiddoes often comment on the hyperactivity on the part of schools stuffing their inboxes with solicitations imploring them to apply.

Email Etiquette

Even though youngsters prefer the ease and spontaneity of the quick text, now is the time to learn how to manage the realm of to/from/subject lines. Email communication is how most in the professional world interact with colleagues, clients -- and prospective employers .

Just as formal telephone skills were once a fundamental element in professional communication, the same stands today when we talk about email.

Be A "Wide Receiver"

As colleges have been observing the strange but growing disconnect with applicants across this "old-timey" platform of email, they are resorting to seeking permission to make contact via text message. For some high schoolers this could come as a welcome blessing, while for others an intrusion into what feels like a personal domain. And let's not forget that not every student is in a position to own a cellular device with a texting plan.

Managing Inbox Overwhelm

Kids might consider opening a designated "college process" email account to separate out the personal stuff from the college mailings. Now there will be no excuse to miss notifications about essentials such as scholarship awards or missing recommendations or test scores . While I had not the good fortune to sit in on even one of the good professor's classes, I feel fortunate to be in the position today to channel his wisdom about bringing the best of study, personal care and time management skills to any student's university experience. Amongst all that new independence and freedom that college students embrace, setting up for academic success in the first year sets the tone for what's to come down the road.

Dr. Altschuler, who has long been regarded as a beloved professor on the Cornell campus, presents Ten Recommendations for First-Year Undergraduates. If I were to highlight one primary tip from his Top-10 for any budding college student, it would be to cultivate that very precious resource -- TIME -- learning how to think ahead and plan, plan, plan.

Squeezing Into a 24-Hour Day

Students benefit when they learn to operate in advance of what is coming the next day, the following week, and the month to come. Whether you think of Ai Weiwei’s work reframing the refugee crisis, Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald’s portraits of the Obamas reimagining portrait painting on a national scale, or Yayoi Kusama’s fanciful Infinity Mirrors rekindling our sense of wonder, it is clear that contemporary art is driven by ideas. The college admissions process can create anxiety. In an attempt to make it less stressful, please tell us an interesting or amusing story about yourself from your high school years that you have not already shared in your application.

1. UGA’s 2017 Commencement speaker Ernie Johnson (Class of ’79) told a story from his youth about what he refers to as blackberry moments. He has described these as “the sweet moments that are right there to be had but we’re just too focused on what we’re doing …, and we see things that are right there within our reach and we neglect them. Blackberry moments can be anything that makes somebody else’s day, that makes your day, that are just sweet moments that you always remember.” Tell us about one of your “blackberry moments” from the past five years.

2. What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What is the best part? What advice would you give to a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?

3. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.

4. Describe a problem, possibly related to your area of study, which you would like to solve. Explain its importance to you and what actions you would take to solve this issue.

In her fourth year at UVA, Laura Nelson was inspired to create Flash Seminars, one-time classes which facilitate high-energy discussion about thought-provoking topics outside of traditional coursework. We live in an age intensely interested in heroes. Professor Joseph Campbell defined “hero” as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Describe a hero in public life and how and why, in your opinion, they meet Professor Campbell’s definition. (150 words)

The Top 5 Summer To-Do's for Rising Juniors & Parents

The summer is for enjoying much-needed downtime and then making a little time for these tips that will make junior year -- and the college process -- run more smoothly:

1. Design a testing schedule for next year, including practice tests, prep calendar, etc. Students can take either the SAT, the ACT, or both. Because colleges equally accept scores from either, students are smart to test according to their personal strengths.

2. Try on something fulfilling over the summer. Jobs, travel, volunteering -- any activity that draws a student's authentic interest provides a great opportunity to grow their world and help discover strengths.

3. Read, read, read. (Anything that you enjoy!)

4. Visit a couple of local colleges -- or check out what's close to the family summer vacation spot -- to gain a sense of how different campuses look and feel. Make an effort to vary campus size and location for a broader perspective ex. large vs. small; urban vs. rural.

5. Have an open parent/student conversation about college affordability . For students heading to college in Fall 2021, it's a smart idea for parents and students to consider financials to determine the family's expected financial contribution (EFC).
